Girls' Divisions Debut At 2002 USA Hockey InLine
National Championships
ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Seven girls' teams are competing in
two divisions in the first-ever Girls' National
Championships at the 2002 USA Hockey InLine National
Championships at The Cooler.
In the girls' 17-and-Under division, the Eagles
(Ohio), the Lady Panthers (Va.) and the Mt. Hood
Thunder (Ore.) are vying for the national crown. After
two days of competition, Mt. Hood leads the pool with
a 2-1-0 record. The Junior Panthers (Va.), the
Panthers 1 (Va.), the Polar Bears (Texas) and Team
Atlanta are skating for the 12-and-Under division
title. Team Atlanta and the Panthers 1 are currently
tied for the lead in the division, each with a 2-0-0
record. They will face each other tomorrow in their
final preliminary round game at noon local time (EDT).
"We worked really hard to be here because we want to
be the first team to win a USA Hockey InLine Girl's
National Championship," said 13-year-old Jodie
McGinlay (Sandy, Ore.) of the Mt. Hood Thunder (Ore.).
"It's been a great experience so far. We love the rink
and the competition is really good."
"The level of play in the girls' divisions and the
presence of these seven teams is definitely
encouraging," said Gary Del Vecchio (Colorado Springs,
Colo.), Director, USA Hockey InLine. "We hope that
this will serve as a foundation for increased
participation for girls and women in the sport."
The USA Hockey InLine National Championships serve as
the nation's premier youth inline hockey event. This
year's tournament showcases 45 teams in six age
divisions and is the culmination of 10 USA Hockey
InLine Regional Championships held earlier this
spring. Teams will compete for national titles in the
10-and-Under, 12-and-Under, 14-and-Under and
17-and-Under age divisions, in addition to the two
girls' divisions.
Today also marked the debut of the Internet
Broadcasting Service Unit's (IBSU.net) live audiocasts
