Also recording assists were defensemen Boyd Sutton (Solodotna, Alaska) and Ernie Hartlieb (Sterling Heights, Mich.) as the U.S. trailed, 4-2, after two quarters. Kyle Amant (Modesto, Calif.) added an unassisted goal late in the third quarter to close the gap to 4-3, but Pavel Beranek of the Czech Republic notched an empty-net goal in the fourth quarter to seal the 5-3 victory.
Team USA netminder Jeff Reynaert (Sterling Heights, Mich.) handed in a strong performance in the loss, stopping 29 of 34 shots, including a Czech penalty shot early in the fourth quarter.
The U.S. is competing in Group F of the A-Pool World Championship alongside Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. The team will face Germany, the No. 1 seed in Group C coming out of the preliminary round, on Thursday, July 25 at 8:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. EDT).
Earlier today, Finland defeated Slovakia, 12-3, in Group E of the A-Pool World Championship. Slovenia is scheduled to face Sweden, while Germany takes on Austria later today.
With teams now re-seeded to form the A-Pool and B-Pool World Championships based on their performance in the preliminary round, the qualification round will determine the seeding for the semifinal and relegation rounds, scheduled for July 26. Medal games for both the A-Pool and B-Pool World Championships will be played on July 27.
